Urgent advise needed please!

Hi All,

I need advise urgently. I have two new puppies that I want to breed with in the future. My little girl is now 7 months old and my boy is now 5 months old. The problem is, she went on heat 2 days ago. The idea is to wait till the 3rd or even 4th heat and then only allow them to breed. I was hoping that my boy would be too young to be fertile when the first heat came, but he is sniffing now and then. I did contact the vet and they suggested a hormone pill, but I don't want to give her anything that could cause problems down the line.

Any ideas or advise on how there heat cycle works and or any tips on how to prevent them mating? I am trying to separate them but still battling with the logistics as I don't know how long this heat cycle will last ect.

Please help.

i would just keep them a part till she off her season

They are both far too young to breed from obviously, this is not a subject I know a great deal about hopefully someone will be along shortly who does.

Have you any friends the male could go too?

There are things you need to think about before you house both sex at that age!

If it were me i would not have got two dogs at the same time, but whats done is done. You will have to keep them seperate for a good while when she is in heat. Be aware that a staffy can get through very tough materials so just a mesh door or baby gate won't suffice.

Doesn't anybody know how their heat cycle works? EG how many days ect. ??

Its about 3 weeks, 4 to be absolutely safe  

I heard its the last week that she bleeds and the week after she stopped that she is most susceptible to fall pregnant. Luckily till thus far my boy shows no interest at all but im not taking any chances as she is too young in my opinion.

Dogs will be interested in her from day one, but she won't be ready to mate until about days 10-13 ish. Then she will accept any dog who happens to be there!

THat phase will last anything from 2 or 3 days to a week, but it's vital that you keep her away from entire males from about the 6th or 7th day right through till the end. The average length of a season is about 21 days, but it can go on for as long as 24 or 25 days.

What I used to do was lead walks only for the first week, then no walks for the next 14 days, then lead walks again for the next week. Stay away from known hotspots like parks etc where you know there will be dogs around & just keep to pavements.

All dogs differ and trust me some dogs will rape a bitch, she doesn't always have to accept!

That's a very emotive way of putting it!

Bitches will snap & snarl at a dog if she isn't ready, and most dogs won't be too ardent as long as there's somebody there to control both dogs, that's why it's important to have the bitch on lead at all times, and stay away from hotspots like the park. I know there are some irresponsible people who walk down the road with their dogs off lead, but most are on lead when they're on the pavements.

No, it isn't.

Nature is a wonderful thing. It tells the bitch when she's ready, but it also tells the dog when she's ready. Yes, they'll try it on, but it's incredibly rare for a dog to keep going once a bitch puts him in his place. However, that's all by the by if the bitch's owner is responsible & keeps her bitch out of the way of other dogs when she's in season.
